Slippery Secrets

Slippery Secrets

Thursday 2 May 2013, 6.30 - 8.30pm
The Chemistry Centre, London W1J 0BA

Most people are only aware of the oil in their car when it appears on the bill for the annual service at the garage. Day-to-day, we never think about what fluids are allowing our vehicles to operate - and that is a good thing. It means the correct lubricants are being used to take that concern out of our minds. However, behind that assurance is a wealth of science, chemistry and research.

In this lecture Dr Ian Bell from Afton Chemicals Ltd, explored the areas where lubricant technology exploits advanced techniques - including advanced spectroscopy, synthesis and characterisation, rheology, tribology, linking chemistry and engineering, and more. The research is then applied to develop event more advanced fluids; these lubricants are not just providing adequate performance day-to-day, they are high technology fluids that afford specific performance by design.

The central challenge is to deliver significant carbon dioxide reductions from the global vehicle population so Dr Ian Bell also explored the leading edge research to achieve this environmental benefit.
